This is Gary the Goanna, he lives in our garden.

He is 4ft long now but could grow anywhere up to 7ft long over the next decade. When he is not hissing at me for invading his space he spends his days sunning himself before climbing trees in the late afternoon.

EXPEDITION BACKYARD

We have a riot of 3 Kookaburras that permanently live in our backyard, feasting on the plethora of small lizards and mammals that cross our lawn daily.

Kookaburras are the largest of the kingfisher family and are an iconic bird of Australia.

Their vocalisation is unmistakable and sounds like raucous laughter, although this sound is actually a territorial call warning other birds to keep out of their territory.

Lots of people ask me if I am ever worried about all the dangerous animals in Far North Queensland like crocodiles, sharks, jellyfish, snakes & spiders.

There is only one animal in my backyard that makes me instantly turn around and start running for the safety of the house.

The Cassowary is a living dinosaur and can run at up to 50 km/h (30 mph) through the dense forest and can jump up to 1.5 m (5 ft).

Cassowaries have three-toed feet with sharp claws. The second toe sports a dagger-like claw that may be 125 mm (5 in) long. This claw is particularly fearsome since cassowaries sometimes kick humans and other animals with their powerful legs.

The last recorded death by Cassowary was in Florida on April 12, 2019. The bird's owner, a 75-year-old man who had raised the animal, was apparently clawed to death after he fell to the ground.

Never, ever underestimate the danger of this remarkable bird.

Over the past few years, you may have noticed that I am no longer gallivanting around the world. My passport is covered in dust and I spend most days working in front of a computer. My love for all creatures great and small however has not diminished during this time and I am lucky enough that most of Australia's iconic species call my backyard home.

So for the next few weeks, I will be photographing whatever animals decide to call my backyard home and sharing them with you all.

Today, I would like you to meet Charlie the wallaby. Charlie and their many mates have lived in my backyard for the better part of two years. Their favourite hobbies are jumping over snakes and chasing goannas while trimming the grass. :-)

FINAL OSIBOT 1 UPDATE!

After approximately 1000 days at sea, our Mary has finally come home!

The autonomous research vessel I designed and launched close to 3 years ago has completed its mission and returned back to Australia last week.

My brother recovered her from a beach just north of Newcastle a few days ago and we have begun the long process of analysing any data she has recorded.
The mystery however is far from solved, we still have no idea where Mary has been for the entire pandemic. Theories abound and will likely be debated for many years to come.

OPTION 1: The South Pacific Loop
Proposed by my father, Ben, this route follows the same route as the whale sharks on the east coast of Australia. However, I believe it’s the least likely option as Mary has very little marine growth on her hull for a vessel that has spent the last few years in tropical waters.

OPTION 2: The Great Circle - Mission Complete
Mary’s original route was programmed into her navigation computer before her launch and had her surfing the large ocean currents and storms while circumnavigating Antarctica and returning back to Australia. While it sounds incredible that Mary actually did complete her original mission, this route does explain the lack of marine growth found on her hull.

Whatever happened to her during these past 3 years, one thing is definitely not debatable - she is one incredibly strong vessel and in returning to our shores all these years later she has inspired us right when we needed it most.

Buoy, do I have an update for you!

Back in July 2019, I built an Autonomous Research Vessel Prototype named OSIBOT 1 - Mary and set her off on her maiden voyage across the Tasman Sea.

Her mission was to collect data across the Tasman Sea and if successful continue down into the Southern Ocean and circumnavigate Antarctica returning to Australia 2 years later.

If successful she would have been the first autonomous boat to accomplish this journey, however, we lost contact with both her GPS trackers near Lord Howe Island after a horrific storm and the vessel was sadly presumed lost at sea.

My brother did a search of the large coral reef near her last known location a few months later but did not find any wreckage. It was a total mystery and after almost 3 years and a global pandemic later Osibot 1 - Mary faded from our thoughts.

Yesterday, I had a phone call from a fisherman who was fishing the continental shelf about 100km north of Sydney. He had taken some photos of a strange boat with my website on the side of it and emailed me the photos.

This fisherman had just made the first confirmed visual sighting of Osibot 1- Mary in 977 days.

Unfortunately, the fisherman did not tow the vessel back to shore, so she is still out there somewhere, floating near her final waypoint waiting for someone to recover her.

Please help us get the word out to all fishermen, cargo ships & pilots between Sydney and Newcastle to keep a close eye out for a 5m white narrow vessel. We are standing by ready to recover her from Sydney but we need an updated sighting to narrow our search area.

I can’t even imagine what tales she could possibly tell after almost 3 years at sea!

I have met a lot of sharks during my life, but I only really got to know one shark very well.

Her name was LSD and she lived most of her life in captivity at SeaWorld on the Gold Coast, Australia. I spent thousands of hours in a large tank with this beautiful creature and never once did she try to attack me.

She did however live up to her name and was a total tripper... her personality was very erratic and she would regularly play chicken with me in the tank. Nothing quite wakes you up after hours underwater then having a 3+ metre Bull Shark swim straight towards you demanding that you move out of her way.

I loved getting to know you LSD and although I wish I got to know you under different circumstances, I still appreciate the special time we got to spend together.

Bob the Robot was bobbing around on the ocean surf

Bob the Robot was bobbing around on the ocean surface in only 1 meter of water after a long day of showing people from around the world the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.

It is a beautiful calm, clear day and Bob is floating less than 10 meters behind our support vessel. The support vessel is covered in ‘Keep Clear – Research’ signs, dive flags and is also kilometres away from the nearest dive site or island.

Suddenly, Bob was hit by something going so fast the security cameras only registered it as a blur. Some silly idiot had not only hit the coral reef at full speed in their boat but had also cut Bob’s tether violently in the process, ripping the lower half of Bob’s frame clean off.

Although this was not the end for Bob, as he is one very very tough robot!

The silly idiot who hit Bob sped off without rescuing Bob from the water, so Bob continued to float against all odds, now untethered, bobbing from reef to reef off Cairns as the tides and currents dictated.

Thankfully, almost 24 hours later an awesome fisherman found Bob floating across the shipping channel and immediately called the emergency number on the robot.

On Bob’s return to land, he underwent emergency surgery to replace his broken frame and attach a new tether.

We are happy to announce that Bob survived his emergency surgery and will be back out on the coral reef soon – ready to show more people the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef!
